Find and resolve the source of water before cosmetic work.
Water stains & tide marks
Yellow or brown marks can show through a new coat of paint.
- Discoloured ceiling patches or ring-shaped marks.
- A stain reappearing through an ordinary emulsion.
What might cause it?
Similar-looking defects can have different causes. Assessment comes before product choice.
Previous or current leaks can leave staining. Condensation and other moisture problems may look similar; colour alone does not identify the source.
How we approach it
Check that the surface is dry, sound and free from loose material.
Choose a stain-blocking system appropriate to the substrate and stain, then finish according to its technical instructions.
A growing stain, wet ceiling or sagging surface needs prompt assessment. Do not paint over an active leak. Check current product technical data, safety instructions and compatibility; this guide is not a site diagnosis or a guaranteed repair specification.
Product selection matters
A suitable primer or sealer may be part of the preparation, but it cannot replace fixing the cause. Zinsser is one of the brands we use; the exact product depends on the surface, defect and intended finish.
