How to… with Matt

Practical tips from Matt, your Handy Helper, to keep your home or business looking its best between visits.

Hello, I’m Matt — your Handy Helper!

I’m the friendly face of H&C Cleaning and Maintenance, and I’m here to help you look after your space. Over the years we’ve picked up plenty of know-how across cleaning, decorating and property care — and it’s only right we share it.

Below you’ll find my growing collection of how-to guides: simple, honest advice you can follow yourself. And when a job needs the professionals, you know who to call.

More guides, videos and pictures are on their way — check back soon!

How to hang a wall mural

Matt planning a wall mural at a table with a tape measure, layout sheets and mural rolls
Step 1 of 9

Plan & prepare

Measure your wall in both directions and check how many panels your mural comes in. Note sockets, switches and radiators, and decide which corner you’ll start from — get this right and everything else follows.

Matt’s tip: Unroll all the panels on the floor first and check the print matches the wall measurements — better to spot it before the paste is mixed.

How to keep your gutters flowing

Matt clearing gutters from the ground with a high-reach gutter vacuum
  1. Check your gutters twice a year — once in late autumn after the leaves fall, and once in spring.
  2. Look for plants, moss or drips below the gutter line — they’re the first signs of a blockage.
  3. Never lean a ladder against the gutter itself, and keep three points of contact at all times.
  4. Scoop debris into a bucket rather than pushing it along — it only ends up in the downpipe.
  5. Flush with water afterwards and watch the downpipe. Slow drainage means a blockage further down.

Matt’s tip: If your gutters are high up or over a conservatory, leave it to us — our high-reach vacuum clears them safely from the ground.

How to prep a room for painting

Matt rolling a deep blue feature wall in a sheeted-up room
  1. Move furniture to the middle of the room and cover everything with dust sheets.
  2. Wash the walls with sugar soap to remove grease and dust — paint won’t stick to a dirty wall.
  3. Fill cracks and holes, then sand them smooth once dry.
  4. Mask edges, sockets and skirting with proper tape, pressing the edge down firmly.
  5. Sand glossy surfaces lightly so the new paint has something to grip.

Matt’s tip: Good preparation is 80% of a great finish. Rush it, and the paint will tell on you within months.

How to choose the right paint finish

Matt recommending a shellac-based primer for stubborn stains
  1. Matt hides imperfections best — ideal for ceilings and older walls.
  2. Eggshell and satinwood wipe clean easily, so they suit hallways, kitchens and busy family rooms.
  3. Gloss is tough and shiny — keep it for skirting boards, doors and window frames.
  4. Bathrooms and kitchens need moisture-resistant formulas to stop mould taking hold.
  5. Stains, knots and odours need a proper stain-blocking primer before any topcoat.
  6. Always test a sample pot on the wall and check it in morning and evening light before committing.

Matt’s tip: Not sure which finish suits your room? That’s exactly what our colour and design advice is for — just ask.

How to stop moss coming back on your roof

Matt pointing out a mossy roof and an overflowing gutter
  1. Remove moss gently — never pressure-wash tiles, as it strips their protective surface.
  2. Clear the gutters at the same time so loosened moss doesn’t block them next rainfall.
  3. Trim back overhanging branches — shade and falling leaves are moss’s best friends.
  4. Apply a suitable biocide treatment to kill the spores you can’t see.
  5. Check again each year; catching regrowth early keeps the job small.

Matt’s tip: We treat roofs as part of our exterior cleaning service, so the moss stays away for longer.

How to look after your patio and driveway

Matt pressure washing a block-paved driveway
  1. Sweep regularly — grit and leaves hold moisture and feed weeds and algae.
  2. Treat weeds between joints early, before the roots lift the blocks or slabs.
  3. Pressure wash on a fan setting, working away from the house, and keep the lance moving.
  4. Re-sand block paving joints once dry to keep the surface locked and stable.
  5. Consider a sealant every few years to slow down staining and regrowth.

Matt’s tip: Too much pressure damages pointing and softer stone. If in doubt, let us do it — our machines are set up for each surface.

How to keep your windows sparkling

Matt cleaning windows with a pure-water pole system
  1. Clean on a cloudy day — direct sun dries the glass too fast and leaves streaks.
  2. Brush off loose dirt and cobwebs from frames and sills first.
  3. Wash with a mild solution, working top to bottom.
  4. Squeegee in overlapping strokes, wiping the blade between each pass.
  5. Buff edges with a dry microfibre cloth for a streak-free finish.

Matt’s tip: Pure-water pole systems leave no residue at all — that’s what we use, and it’s why our finish lasts longer.

Which products should I use?

Matt with one of the professional products H&C uses every day
  1. For stubborn stains, water marks and odours, a shellac-based primer like Zinsser B-I-N seals them in one coat.
  2. For everyday walls and ceilings, trade emulsions from Johnstone’s, Crown or Albany give better coverage than budget paint.
  3. For filling cracks and smoothing walls, Toupret fillers are the ones we reach for — they sand beautifully.
  4. For sanding, Mirka abrasives last longer and keep dust down, especially with extraction.
  5. For brushes and rollers, good-quality professional tools hold more paint and leave a cleaner finish.
  6. Cheap paint usually means extra coats — buying better once is cheaper than buying twice.

Matt’s tip: These are the exact brands we use on your home — ask us and we’ll happily point you to the right product for your job.

How to hang wallpaper like a professional

Matt transforming a room with a fresh new wall finish
  1. Check your walls are sound, clean and dry — paper won’t hide damp or flaking paint.
  2. Size the walls with a coat of diluted paste so the paper grips evenly.
  3. Measure and cut each drop with a little extra top and bottom, and match the pattern before cutting the next.
  4. Paste evenly, fold the paper to soak, then hang from the top, smoothing from the centre outwards.
  5. Trim with a sharp blade against a straight edge, and wipe away paste marks straight away.

Matt’s tip: Patterned paper in a room with lots of corners is trickier than it looks — we hang wallpaper every week, so save yourself the stress.

How to care for fascias, soffits and cladding

Matt checking fascias and guttering on a brick home
  1. Wash uPVC fascias and soffits once or twice a year with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
  2. Never use abrasive pads or solvents on uPVC — they dull the surface permanently.
  3. Check wooden fascias for peeling paint or soft spots; catch rot early and it’s a small repair.
  4. Keep gutters clear — overflowing water is the biggest cause of stained and rotten rooflines.
  5. Repaint timber every few years with a good exterior paint system to keep it protected.

Matt’s tip: We clean fascias, soffits and cladding as part of our exterior cleaning service — safely from the ground with our reach equipment.

How to keep hard floors gleaming

Matt mopping a tiled floor in a bright living room
  1. Vacuum or sweep first — mopping over grit just scratches the surface.
  2. Use a cleaner suited to your floor type; the wrong one dulls the finish.
  3. Wring the mop well — too much water seeps into joints and edges.
  4. Mop in sections, rinsing the mop head often so you’re not spreading dirty water.
  5. Let the floor dry fully before walking on it to avoid marks.

Matt’s tip: For a deep clean or end-of-tenancy shine, our cleaning team brings professional machines and products.
