Assess whether the surface can be made sound or needs removal and repair.
Powdery & chalking surfaces
Loose powder can prevent a sound bond for new decoration.
- A chalky residue on a cloth or hand.
- Dusty masonry or an old coating shedding fine material.
What might cause it?
Similar-looking defects can have different causes. Assessment comes before product choice.
Weathering, degraded coatings, weak plaster or unsuitable earlier materials can leave a friable surface.
How we approach it
Remove loose powder and debris using a suitable safe method.
Where appropriate, use a stabilising or sealing system specified for the surface before finishing.
A sealer cannot make every crumbling surface serviceable. Persistent deterioration or unidentified old materials need further assessment. Check current product technical data, safety instructions and compatibility; this guide is not a site diagnosis or a guaranteed repair specification.
Product selection matters
A suitable primer or sealer may be part of the preparation, but it cannot replace fixing the cause. Zinsser is one of the brands we use; the exact product depends on the surface, defect and intended finish.
